Botox: What’s the big deal?!

Why Botox, Dr. Denk?

Personally, I’d like to look as alert and awake as I feel. I can’t claim to be young any longer, but I CAN claim that I want to look as young on the outside as I feel on the inside. Sure, that old banality, right? Actually, no! It’s me being honest.

When I first witnessed Botox being injected in patients as early as 1995 in New York City, I didn’t think it would amount to much. Dr. Joseph McCarthy, chairman of the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (IRPS) at NYU, asked Dr. Andrew Turk and me, both plastic surgery fellows at the time, to go observe an Upper East Side physician spend half a day treating patients with Botulinum toxin. Interesting? Yes! Did I think Botox would be the No. 1 non-surgical cosmetic procedure on the planet? Definitely NOT!

Fast forward to 2002, when my local Allergan/Botox rep walked through my office’s front door. I received my initial treatment about 8 months later, specifically for the crease between my eyes, now commonly referred to as your “11’s”. You see, I had had about 15 stitches put in a laceration between my eyes as a senior in high school, (that’s another story), so my glabella was already getting unwanted attention. But as she often does my lovely wife said: “You have to do something about those lines between your eyebrows!” So, my first treatment was in 2003! And I’ve been getting treated ever since.

Full reveal: There are 21 muscles on each side of our face, and our daily expressions and well-earned creases (read: wrinkles) are a product of these muscles’ contractility. I think I’ve had almost every one of these muscles injected with Botox over the past 18 years. Not all at one time, mind you.

Botox (Botulinum Toxin A), a neurotoxin protein:

  • Was the first on the market

  • Remains the worldwide market leader

  • Has over 25 FDA approved medical indications

  • Is the brand I trust!

So, there it is. My health, specifically my mental health, is very important to me. My appearance is a part of my health and daily attitude. Call it vanity, but it’s the human condition. I’d like to live in my “happy place” as much of the time as I’m able to. Botox injections are a game-changer for me. Simply put, Botox makes me look and feel better!

My Botox injections produce predictable as well as natural/subtle results. It’s a snap to get treated. I always get treated by the thoughtful, expert injector, Jennifer Oshiro, RN. I’d recommend the same to anyone!
