Why the sudden fuss about butts?!

How the Brazilian Butt Lift took the world by storm.

Well, for one thing, the fascination ain’t new! The gluteal region (medical jargon for buttocks) has been emphasized throughout human history and serves as an important element of sexual attraction and beauty in most cultures. It is reasonable to surmise that a favorable gluteal area is close to the origin of human aesthetics. Hmmm…While you ponder that for a moment, I’m sure you'll agree that the “fanny” (more medical jargon) is a source of inspiration across multiple artistic disciplines: literature, paintings, sculpture, dance, and songs!

Humans owe a fair bit of credit to the function of the derriere. Primates have a very small gluteus maximus muscle which helps them to climb trees, but they cannot maintain an upright position for very long. The human gluteus maximus muscle is very large and strong, is attached to our boney skeleton, and provides the support necessary to walk upright. Walk, run, dance, and even twerk, all thanks to our booty. How ‘bout that?

Let’s get back to aesthetics: Gluteal augmentation and enhancement actually began as early as 1969, when a surgeon placed a breast implant to correct a buttock deformity. Those inventive ‘60s!!

By now everyone’s heard of the Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL. It’s gotten its fair share of headlines over the past 10-15 years. In part thanks to the backsides of celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and Beyonce. Voluptuous booties are the new breast augmentation! Women around the world aren’t heading to the gym to beef up their behinds-they are hitting up the plastic surgeon’s office and traveling the world over to find the “best” or most convenient or most affordable plastic surgical clinic.

As stated earlier, liposuction and BBL surgery are not new, they have just gotten popular. Plastic surgeons, specifically board-certified plastic surgeons, know a thing or two about liposuction, transplantation, and grafting. The first cosmetic buttock enhancement with fat grafting was performed in Mexico City as early as 1991. I, myself, performed my first BBL/ fat transfer at least 14 years ago.

One more important point to consider: Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery CAN be and HAS been done safely for the past 14 years in my operating room. Safety should be your surgeon’s first consideration when performing any surgery. They are many naysayers and negative nellies out there. A multitude of showmen/showwomen, plenty of wannabes, and just some really unsafe surgical centers and techniques. So be careful! #doyourresearch
